Hotel Edison New York Fun Facts
The Hotel Edison is one of the oldest accommodations in Broadway area. It has a colorful history.
One of the main highlights of the interior is the art deco mural ‘Cornucopia’ in the lobby. It was painted by the artist Gregory Chatov who was famous for the design of the Ford Pavilion at the 1939 New York World Fair as well as hand-painted costumes for distinguished Broadway producers.
Some scenes from iconic gangster movie featuring Marlon Brando “The Godfather” were shot in Hotel Edison.
Updated: I wrote this in 2014 but in January 2015, when was my second time staying at this accommodation my first impressions have been confirmed. I put up at the Hotel Edison during the so called “epic” winter storm Juno in New York. Both times I felt comfortable and close to the “crossroads of the world”. During the snowfall, the Danny`s bar, located just next to the hotel was the only place serving food and café in the area. Lots of starving tourists came to eat there in a day when even Starbucks cafes were closed. The place was cheap and clean. They offered a cup of coffee for $1.25; a bagel with cream cheese for $2.75; a banana for $0.75 and a bottle of wine for $18.
During this stay, a slight downside was the fact that all tourists received a message that due to the storm the hotel`s housekeepers would not be able to clean the rooms. Another annoying thing was the significant price rise during the snowfall – accommodation rates were almost twice as expensive. Because there is not soundproofing at all, I could hear the police sirens and the noise of snow-removal equipment even at night.
Since the Starbucks on Times Square was closed, I was unable to use their free Wi-Fi. In Edison hotel I had to pay $10 for a 24-hour Wi-Fi connection to reschedule my flights. In the hotel`s business center tourists could use free Internet for 15 minutes to print their boarding cards but only using a list of selected airlines from the system.
Apart from weather challenges in New York, I had a great time in this Times Square hotel during the winter storm.
An interesting fact is that the biggest 2015 Oscar winner ‘Birdman‘ was filmed in Edison Hotel’s Rum House. All bar scenes featuring Michael Keaton and Edward Norton took place in the bar. The area around Hotel Edison – the Theatre district and Times Square – was the main location where the movie was shot. It is only 3 blocks from the St James theater in Manhattan where most of the film scenes got made.
