This is one of Lefkada’s biggest villages and probably one of the most scenic places on the island. Agios Nikitas is 13 km from Lefkada town and has plenty of cafes and taverns. The pleasantly relaxed village also has a small beach with crystal clear water. Sometimes the beach gets crowded because many people stay in Agios Nikitas but the beach is small. Agios Nikitas is the only place near Kathisma where there are restaurants and markets.
Agios Nikitas has an Italian influence so we strongly suggest you have a walk around it. The buildings are really interesting and the small streets make it look even more antique and exciting.
Location of Agios Nikitas, Lefkada, Greece
Agios Nikitas is located on the west coast of Lefkada Island and is only 10 minutes drive from the island`s capital. The picturesque village is only 2 km from Kathisma beach and 30 km from Porto Katsiki and Egremni beach.
It is situated on a beautiful bay. It looks so tiny that you’d hardly be aware that Agios Nikitas is one of the largest Lefkada’s villages. For many years this place was one of the top spots for tourists. The focal point of the small town is the square in the heart of the community.
The tiny beach is often very crowded because it is perfect for swimmers. It is protected of big waves and when at Kathisma, Porto Katsiki and Egremni it is not possible to swim because of big waves, this place looks like an oasis. Here, the hot Mediterranean climate is alleviated by sea breezes.
Things to do in Agios Nikitas, Lefkada, Greece
Although the village may be small, there are plenty of things to do. You can either go to the beach and enjoy the nature or go to a cafe or a tavern and explore new culinary horizons. Here you can try seafood straight from the ocean. One of the specialties is grilled octopus. It is always served with french fries. It costs 11-12 euros depending on the restaurant. Fried or grilled squids are also a tasty dish to try. The price is about 9-10 euros per portion. Vegetarians can opt for Aubergine “Saganaki” – an oven grilled egg plant staffed with minced white cheese and vegetables. There is another version – Aubergine “Paputzaki” based on minced meat and local plants. Both variation cost 7-8 euros. Do not ignore the local wine – a carafe costs only 5 euros.
There are 3 supermarkets in the village where you can buy almost anything you want for snacks. As many small towns in Greece, there is not a pharmacy in this village. You can buy from a grocery some basic necessities and vitamins but for medications you will have to go to the capital city. There is an ATM available in the village’scenter. It is very useful because you are expected to pay in cash for almost everything.
Milos Beach
You can also rent a boat to the famous Milos beach. There is a vessel which connects the village and the beach. It costs 6 euros per person in one way. The boat does not operates in windy days. Most of the people take the mountainous path from the village center to the remote but extremely beautiful shore.
This is an unspoiled and quiet beach thanks to the fact that it is difficultly accessible. To get there, you have to walk for about 20 minutes through a mountainous interior. There is a narrow path from Agios Nikitas to Milos beach. The walk is very exciting since you pass through citrus trees, lime green cypresses, and olive trees. All these Mediterranean plants stretch down to the sea and form great natural scenery. Occasionally you will be able to see stunning views of the aquamarine Ionian sea from above.
The biggest challenge is the way back to the village because you have to climb many stairs up to the hill. That is why some tourists prefer the taxi boat which takes you to Agios Nikitas in 10 minutes.
Milos is not an organized beach. If you want to spend a day there you will have to bring with you a sun umbrella, a bottle of water, some fruits or snacks, etc. There is a natural shadow in some parts of the sandy beach, but it is always worth being prepared. Local people recommend wearing sports shoes on your way to Milos beach. We personally did the hike with classic flip-flops.
The magic place is settled on a bay which is surrounded by spectacular limestone cliffs. The place features almost a kilometre long and wide sandy beach and exotic blue color of the water. The left part of the coast is used as a nudist area.
In high season there are merchandisers who sell cold Greek coffee, grilled corn or donuts.
In general, Milos beach is a quiet place and maybe one of the best in the area. Contrasting to crowded Kathisma and Agios Nikitas beaches, here you can get a private territory and relaxing environment.
On the hill there is accommodation consisting of a few luxury studious – Millos bay villas. They overlook the beach and the breathtaking scenery of the Ionian Sea. The residence features a private access to the beach.
All this makes Milos beach one of the best in Greece. With its unparalleled sandy beach and beautiful turquoise sea, this place is not only one of the top spots in the Mediterranean but a true ecological paradise. The effort to get there is really worth it!
